Commodore's Corner

The editor has been waiting patiently for the Commodore (me) to come up with some sage commentary for this newsletter. The muse seems to have taken some time off because I am having a hard time coming up with anything really exciting.

So, since I can’t come up with anything interesting, I might as well write about my experiences running the US Youth Sailing Championship, June 20-26, 2003. This regatta is the premiere event for youth sailor (19 & under) in the United States. It is limited to the top 150 eligible sailors in either the single or double handed division. (With a target of 50 Lasers and 50 420’s) The 2003 event was scheduled for Area K and Milwaukee Yacht Club was selected. I was asked/volunteered to be the General Chairman about 18 months ago. It has been a full time job for the past six months and plenty of advanced planning before that.

Planning for regattas is a very interesting experience because while it is absolutely necessary to sweat the details down to the smallest increment, the plan must be flexible enough to react to the inevitable unk-unk’s. (Unknown unknowns) My take on this is that if you puzzle over every detail, you have necessarily gone through the process of reviewing several options and when option A blows up, you have already have options B through F cued up. Regatta organizers must realize that things never go according to “THE PLAN.” But that’s OK, make the most appropriate response and continue on.

My plan was to get as many key volunteers as possible in place as soon as possible. You find out who your friends are when you run a regatta like this. I have found that people who are committed to the concept are more valuable than experts. This is not rocket science and dedication and long hours beat résumés every time. You cannot do everything yourself.

The regatta itself was blessed with incredible weather. We had eight incredible days stung together from set-up to teardown. The wind was never less than eight knots and topped out around twenty. John Archibald and his huge RC group ran trapezoid courses like they had done it for years and not a single “charlie” was needed in eleven races. Dean Cady was the Chief Judge and did a wonderful, low-keyed job. You know that the race management was excellent when it was almost transparent.

And the kids... The kids are why we did this. These kids are smart, ambitious, and are great athletes. They are the future of our sport.

Judge Training Workshop

US SAILING will present a Judge Training Workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 14-15, 2003, at Adams Mark Hotel, Fourth and Chestnut Street, St Louis, Missouri.

This workshop and test will meet the training requirements for certification or re-certification for US SAILING judges. The principal instructors are Tom Farquhar and Ted Everingham. Tom is Chairman of the Race Management and Appeals committees and one of the founders of the Judges Certification program. Ted is the Chairman of the Judges Committee. Although the workshop focuses on the duties of a judge, all sailors will benefit from this presentation. Participants are encouraged to take the qualification test, but are not required to do so. Check-in will be from noon to 1pm on Tuesday, October 14 and the afternoon session will begin at 1pm. There will be several breaks including a dinner break at 5:30 pm. The evening session is from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm and will be a lively opportunity for role-playing and mock hearings. The workshop continues on Wednesday morning at 8:30 am. Lunch will be served at noon. The 90-minute examination begins at 3:30 pm followed by a debriefing.

On-line registration is now available. The fee is $80 for US SAILING members and $100 for non-members. The fee includes handouts, all beverages breaks, lunch on Wednesday and the examination fee. Study Questions are available on the US SAILING website. Participants should complete the study questions prior to the workshop and are required to have a copy of the current US SAILING Judges Manual, Racing Rules of Sailing and US SAILING Appeals books with them at the workshop.

Overnight accommodations may be made at Adams Mark (Reservations 800/444-ADAM). To receive the special meeting rate, identify yourself as a US SAILING meeting attendant. LMSRF Office News

The LMSRF Board at the March meeting approved a $6,000 grant to McKirahan & Associates for a software improvement to how input and output is transmitted through the LMSRF office. This office automation project will provide for more efficient recording, tracking and transmission of both membership and race entry data.

There will be a change in servers mid-july that may result in a day or two of some interruptions but after that the “look” of LMSRF.org will be different on the site. Entering information will be quite different. This change will provide many benefits to you as an LMSRF member and as a race participant. Most of the information will all be available to you at one time. You will be able to enter one or more races, or series more easily and be able to quickly review your previously recorded information. You will also be able to review the “scratch sheet” of what boats have entered for each listed race as of the current date so you will no longer need to ask for it at the office.

This change will also bring several other benefits to the office in getting up-to-date report information on finances, sending out entry confirmations and series information.

A Letter of Thanks...

We would like to thank you for your financial assistance towards our trip to the 2003 CISA Advanced Racing Clinic. The event was an incredible experience. We both learned a lot about our sailing and met lots of new people at this event.

This clinic was unlike most other regattas in that almost every minute was spent on sailing. Top level coaches and relatively small numbers of students make this clinic far superior to any other clinic in the country. We had almost no free time because we were always busy with our instructors. There were three clinic days, each one having a general theme: boat handling, boat speed, and tactics. The fourth day was a regatta day where we were able to test out our newly learned techniques.

Every team of competitors was assigned a host family to stay with during the event. Our host family was very fun and had an incredible house on the Balboa peninsula. This event definitely ranks up there with the best of them when it comes down to how much fun we had and how much we learned.

Thank you again for your support. It would have been difficult for us to go to this regatta without your help. We feel very fortunate that we have a committee such as yours that we can rely on for financial support.

Sincerely,
Craig Thompson and Blake DeBoer

288 AMERICAP II ENTRIES FOR MACKINAC RACE!

Exceeding all prior predictions with Chicago Yacht Club’s change from LMPHRF to Americap II for the race, the entries poured in within the last two weeks of the deadline. It was a welcome surprise for the support of the Americap II rule to the Mackinac Committee who has spent two years in deliberation and research before mandating the change for this year’s race. Be sure and follow your favorite boat on this year’s up-to-the-minute results as they are posted on CYC’s improved web site.
