Commodore's Corner

Because my term is expiring this fall, this will be my last Commodore’s article. I want to take this opportunity to thank the board and the staff of LMSRF especially Don Glasell for all of their help. It has been a fun and productive couple of years and thanks again for all of the support.

Now that the season is winding down, it’s not too soon to start planning for next year. Get your club to get a Safety-at Sea Seminar or a Race Committee training day on next spring’s schedule. The LMSRF office can help with the details. Upgrade your own skills over the winter. Attend a judge’s seminar or a RC class or even a First Aid/CPR course. Contact your local Power Squadron and brush up on your navigation skills. Take your whole crew! Sailing requires many ancillary skills to make a complete seaman. And if you already have these skills, volunteer to teach a class yourself. There is no better way to master a subject than to prepare and teach a class on that topic.

Have a great off-season and see you in the spring.

LMSRF Takes back Richardson Cup

2003 Richardson Cup - YRUGL's Match Racing Championship - - Perfect weather conditions prevailed September 13 & 14 for the 64th running of the Yacht Racing Union of the Great Lakes’ Richardson Trophy Regatta, cohosted by Port Huron Yacht Club and Sarnia Yacht Club. Six teams, representing Lake Ontario (LYRA), Lake Erie (I-LYA), Detroit Regional Yachting Association (DRYA), Lake Huron (LHYA), Lake Michigan (LMSRF), and Lake Superior (LSYA) competed in a double round robin series sailed in S2 7.9’s on Lake Huron off Sarnia, Ontario.

Saturday’s round robin, sailed in shifty 8-14 knot offshore breezes, left Chris Van Tol (Lake Erie) and Hank Stuart (Lake Ontario) tied in first place, with Sarah Buckley (Lake Michigan) third. Sunday in building 10-20 knot winds the LMSRF team had an outstanding day with 5 wins, for an overall series win in a tie breaker with Lake Erie. Sarah Buckley, Derrick Reig, Justin Hood, Tom Kent and Brian Smith took the Richardson Cup back to Lake Michigan for the first time since 1967.

The last winner of the Richardson Trophy for Lake Michigan was Harry Nye of the Murphy and Nye Sailmakers fame.

BARKOW WINS RIWKC

Annapolis, MD - Sally Barkow of Nashotah, Wis., and her crew of Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, N.Y.), Carrie Howe (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Annie Lush (Bournemouth, England), have won US Sailing's 2003 Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship. Going into the final races, Barkow's team held a 20-point lead over the 66 teams competing. In light 8-10 knot breezes, the foursome once again showed command of their boat-handling skills and the scoreboard. With finishes of 3-8, they maintained a healthy lead on the fleet and became champions in what has become one of the world's most prestigious women's sailing regattas.

"It feels awesome to have won," said the 23-year-old Barkow, a two-time college All American from Old Dominion University (class of '02) who only started sailing keelboats one and a half years ago. "We approached today with confidence just like we approached every other day. We didn't worry about the more mature teams, because they can make mistakes just as easily as us. We have learned a ton here, from communications, to boat handling to mentally focusing for five days. They were big lessons. We'll take those with us. It was a big step for our campaign." Barkow, Capozzi and Howe are on the US Sailing Team and hope to be the USA's representatives in the Yngling class at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. - Media Pro Int'l, http://www.ussailing.org/
